ACTFL (American Standards on the Teaching of Foreign Language) Standards The ultimate goal is for learners to acquire a functional use of another language. The goal is not for students to become proficient. The goal in any foreign language class is for learners to grow one level in proficiency. It is assumed that most Spanish 1 students begin the class as a Novice Low and by the end of the class they should be a Novice Mid. The Novice Mid standard for Presentational Speaking is, I can present information about myself and some other very familiar topics using a variety of words, phrases, and memorized expressions. The Novice Mid standard for Presentational Writing is, I can write lists and memorized phrases on familiar topics. The Novice Mid standard for Interpretive Listening is I can recognize some familiar words and phrases when I hear them spoken. ISTE Standard Creativity and Innovation - Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative processes and products using technology. a. Subject Area: Spanish 1 General Characteristics The students are 14-18 years old. The class is made up of three freshmen, 21 sophmores, three juniors, and three seniors. There are 21 Caucasian students, three African American, one African American, one Asian, one Hispanic and one multi-racial. One student has a documented disability that does not affect his ability to learn but rather the way in which he learns. It is obvious from classroom observation that learning a foreign language comes more naturally to some than others. Ten students in the class have had some exposure to the foreign language either through home, middle school or another school. There are 16 boys and 14 girls in the class. Majority of students are well behaved but some struggle to sit still after lunch. There is an increase in participation during partner or group work. Students appear to be more engaged in writing and speaking activities when allowed to use a computer to complete them. Note: A google form was used to collect data. Learning Styles Students appear to learn best when technology is involved and they are allowed to work with a partner or in a small group. The learning style survey determined that the learning styles vary in the class. Five students are auditory learners, twelve students are visual learners, eight students are tactile learners and the rest are a mixture of learning styles. Students also appear to learn best when they can interact with the content using websites like Quizlet, Conjuguemos or Kahoot. |
